What is the difference between a Shopping Centre and a Mall?
The generally accepted definition of a Shopping Centre is an un-enclosed Centre with direct access to all stores from the parking area. A Mall is an enclosed Centre with access to all stores under cover, which is ideal in extremes of heat, cold or rain. The word “Centre” on its own on this website, means either a Shopping Centre or a Mall.

Born in Johannesburg, Mark Berman started his first business at the age of thirteen. After matriculating at Damelin Mark did his National Service as a medic, then worked in his father‟s clothing factory for three years before setting up his own clothing business, which was turning over fifteen million per year by the time he was twenty-five. A downturn in the economy forced Mark to close his business and hold various jobs that took him all over South Africa, Mocambique and even Spain. Eventually he identified the property business as an industry he felt he could really succeed in. After a time with Camden Real Estate in Parow, outside Cape Town he joined Broll, becoming one of their top brokers over the next two years. Thereafter Mark was sent up to Johannesburg to open Broll in that city.

He joined the leading Architect and Property Developer Louis Peens, who had the idea of starting a new Property Investment Company called Keystone Investments. Over the next two years Mark gained invaluable experience in the fields of architecture, design and property development, finally realizing that he was now ready to start his own company. He studied Property Law and Property Asset Management and received a diploma in Advanced Project Management.

He and his wife Melissa started SoundRock Property Consultants. Since 1998 SoundRock has been the platform that has rapidly propelled Mark Berman into property development in South Africa.

Melissa Berman
Managing Director SoundRock Property Consultants

Melissa Berman was born in Durban and completed her schooling at Grosvenor Girls High. Melissa was torn between her love of travelling and the Beautician Industry. At one point she almost joined the management team of Camelot Beauty Treatment in its early formative days and would have relocated to Johannesburg where Camelot is a market leader today. Instead she accepted an offer to join South African Airways where she multi-tasked, working for a number of departments ranging from Sales to Admin posts. She was eventually appointed as PA to the regional Sales and Marketing Manager for Kwa Zulu Natal. During this period, apart from accumulating enormous admin and sales experience over the nine years she was with SAA, Melissa also widened her life experiences by travelling extensively, particularly to the East (Hong Kong, Singapore etc) as well as New Zealand and Australia.

Managing Member SoundRock Tenant Co-ordination

Marius was born in Johannesburg but grew up in Heidelberg. He matriculated in the town‟s Hoer Volkskool and later attended Pretoria Technikon where he worked towards obtaining a National Diploma in Architecture. From 1998 he worked for an architect in Heidelberg, then in Johannesburg, whilst simultaneously studying for a qualification in Project Management through UNISA‟s Business School of Leadership. In 2006 Marius registered with the South African Council for the Architectural profession (SACAP) where he was rated on both his work experience and educational qualifications. This enabled him to be licensed as a Professional Architectural Technician (Prof. no. T0557).

For eleven years he worked with architects on construction and the completion of buildings, initially dealing with Tenant Installations and later Project Management. During this period he worked with retail, commercial, industrial and residential properties.

More recently Marius started his own business, which included Construction Project Management and Architectural Design work. However he was then approached by Mark Berman seeking an experienced partner to act as Managing Member of his Tenant Co-ordination company Marius recognized the long term opportunities that SoundRock could offer and joined them in April 2008.
